This is a plain-English summary of how Sunsipper handles your data, written to be readable rather than exhaustive. It isn't legal advice. If you need a formal answer for a specific situation, get in touch and we'll help.

The short version
Sunsipper is built to need very little about you. You can browse the map and find sunny terraces without an account and without telling us who you are. We don't sell data, we don't run advertising trackers, and we collect only what the features you use actually require.
What we collect, and why
- Your location — only when you ask for it. If you tap “near me”, your browser shares your position so we can sort terraces by distance. This happens in your browser to draw the map; we don't need it to identify you and we don't build a location history from it. If you never tap it, we never ask.
- Account details — only if you sign in. Saving favourite terraces needs an account. When you sign in, we receive your email address and name from the sign-in method you chose, so we can keep your saved list and recognise you next time. No account, no favourites — and that's a fine way to use Sunsipper.
- Your saved terraces. If you sign in and save terraces, we store that list against your account so it's there when you come back.
- Anonymous usage stats. We measure basic, aggregated things like which pages get visited and how fast they load, so we can keep the app working well. This is privacy-friendly and cookieless — it isn't tied to your identity and isn't used to profile you. To count unique visits, one of our analytics tools (Ahrefs) briefly derives a throwaway daily signature from your IP address and browser type — without storing your IP address or setting any cookies, and reset every day so it can't follow you over time.
- Error reports — to find and fix bugs. We use an error-monitoring service (Sentry). When the app hits an error — and on a small, random sample of ordinary sessions — it records technical diagnostics and a short replay of the page. All text and form inputs are masked out, so what's captured is the broken layout and interactions, not your content or anything that identifies you. It's cookieless and never used to advertise to you or build a profile.
- Messages you send us. If you use the contact form or email us, we keep your message and reply address so we can actually reply.
Cookies
We keep cookies to a minimum. The main one is a sign-in cookie that remembers you're logged in — set only if you choose to sign in. Our usage measurement doesn't use tracking cookies. We don't run advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
Who else is involved
Running a web app means relying on a few trusted service providers — for example to host the site, handle sign-in, show maps, measure performance, monitor errors, and deliver contact-form messages to us. They process data only to provide those services to us, under their own data-protection obligations, and not for their own purposes. For usage measurement specifically, we use Vercel and Ahrefs, both cookieless. We choose providers that take privacy seriously, and we're happy to point you to the relevant ones on request.
Where data lives and how long we keep it
Data is processed within the EU/EEA or under equivalent safeguards. We keep account data and saved favourites for as long as you keep your account, and contact messages for as long as we need them to handle your enquiry. Ask us to delete your account and we'll remove your personal data, except anything we must keep for legal reasons.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you can ask to see the personal data we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or object to how we use it, and you can withdraw consent (such as location access) at any time. To exercise any of these, email hello@sunsipper.com. You also have the right to complain to your local data-protection authority — in the Netherlands, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.
Children
Sunsipper isn't aimed at children and we don't knowingly collect data from anyone under 16.
Changes
If we change how we handle data, we'll update this page and move the date at the top. Material changes will be made clear.
